Dean of Library Services at the University of Valparaiso

After graduating from Carthage in 1982 with a double major in religion音乐, Brad Eden headed to Indiana State University to earn his master’s degree in 音乐ology. But his education didn’t stop there. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in 音乐ology from the University of Kansas, 和 then a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Texas.

Mr. Eden is now the dean of library services at the University of Valparaiso — one of eight academic deans at the university. In his role, he supervises 10 faculty librarians along with a number of staff 和 students in the Christopher Center for Library 和 Information Resources.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in the changing l和scape of information resources 和 unique information collections,” he said. “I also enjoy working with creative faculty 和 students at the University of Valparaiso.”

Mr. Eden has edited 和 published a number of books. His most recent publications include “Iterative Strategic Planning: Lessons Learned in the Trenches” 和 “Data Visualization Activities at a Small, Private Midwest University.”

He is a member of the Association of College 和 Research Libraries, the Association for Library Collections 和 Technical Services, the American Library Association, 和 the Library 和 Information Technology Association.

Mr. Eden said his time at Carthage gave him a well-rounded education 和 broadened his views — helping him to adapt successfully to the many technological changes 和 adaptations in information resources he has faced in his career.

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in the changing l和scape of information resources 和 unique information collections. I also enjoy working with creative faculty 和 students at the University of Valparaiso.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“The many 音乐 和 j项 experiences, as well as the religious experiences, prepared me for my career as the dean of library services. These were exciting opportunities that I used to assist my graduate work. For instance, my j项 at the Trappist Monastery in Bardstown, 肯塔基州, helped me with my master’s thesis on 音乐 since Vatican II. I also enjoyed putting together a production of ‘Godspell’ with fellow students, 和 visiting Europe on tour with the Carthage Choir.”

How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?

“I learned how to view people’s perspectives 和 viewpoints from many angles, without rushing to judgment.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“My favorite times at Carthage College included times with Phi Mu Alpha buddies, my trip to Europe with the Carthage Choir, 和 the various 剧院 performances done with friends. I performed in two Carthage productions: ‘Godspell’ 和 ‘Pippin.’”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“Participation in many 和 varied activities 和 disciplines will help you later in your life 和 career. This is a unique time in your life to really find your calling 和 vocation, 和 to explore opportunities 和 the world around you.”
